“The renovated lobby of USA Children’s
& Women’s Hospital is providing a warm and soothing welcome for our
patients and their families, who often arrive under difficult
circumstances,” said USA President Gordon Moulton. “The Senior Bowl and
Food World are very generous partners, and that's one reason why this
hospital has such remarkable facilities, equipment and technology."
“On behalf of the patients and staff of
USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, we want to thank the Food World
Senior Bowl Charity Run for their generous support,” added Dr. Becky
DeVillier, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital administrator.
Food World and the Senior Bowl
committed $250,000 over five years to the hospital’s lobby renovation.
“The Food World Senior Bowl charitable
partnership presents an opportunity for our company to fulfill the
responsibility of returning something to our communities in a way
greater than ever before,” said Bruno’s vice president and general
manager Scott North.
The renovated lobby, designed by
TAG/The Architects Group, Inc. of Mobile and built by Sterling
Contracting and Fabrication Specialists, is colorful, inviting and
accessible, and the open space is often used for interactive exhibits
that are especially enjoyable for patients who are not able to leave the
building. A mammoth Christmas tree graced the lobby during the holidays
and a festive Mardi Gras tree has taken its place, and an interactive
“lighthouse” for children’s play is under construction. Other lobby
features include a see-through Wishing Well, and a sculpture titled
“Kaleidoscope.”
“The success we continue to enjoy with
the Charity Run, combined with the Senior Bowl’s goals of charitable
giving that we share with Food World, enables us to positively affect
thousands of individuals who are served and impacted by USA Children’s &
Women’s Hospital,” said Senior Bowl president Steve Hale.

Visitors are also benefiting from the
addition of a comfortable waiting area, a more customer-friendly and
accessible reception desk, and enhanced wayfinding signs. The gift shop
is more convenient, and offers a greater variety of items such as
premature infant wear, cards, gift items and products for new mothers.
“USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is a
non-profit hospital that relies on community support,” said Dr. Joseph
Busta, vice president for development and alumni relations at the
University of South Alabama. “The Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run
leadership is an example of community giving at its best.”
USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, part
of the USA Health System, is the only free-standing hospital in Alabama
and one of less than ten nationwide dedicated solely to the treatment of
children and women. Children’s & Women’s has the area’s only Level III
neonatal intensive care unit - offering the most advanced care for
premature and critically ill newborns - along with the area’s only
pediatric intensive care unit for critically ill and injured children,
the USS Hope cancer and sickle cell treatment center for children, and
specialized high-risk OB/GYN care.
The Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run
is one of America’s premier road races, held annually in November in
downtown Mobile and features over 4,500 runners in its 10K and One-Mile
Fun Run events. Since 2000, the race has also held the prestigious
distinction of serving as the USA Track and Field 10,000 Meter National
Championship, as America’s premier distance runners and U.S. Olympians
have competed for the coveted USA title during the event. The 18th
annual Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run is scheduled for November,
2005.
