$208,000 To 18 Area Charities
Proceeds raised by
the 18th annual Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run
held last November bring total raised by the event since its inception

MOBILE, Ala. (May 25, 2006) -- Food World and Senior Bowl
officials announced on Thursday that checks totaling $208,000
representing proceeds generated by the 18th annual Food World Senior
Bowl Charity Run held last November would be presented to 18 charitable
agencies along the Gulf Coast selected as the event’s donation
recipients for 2006.he Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run’s mission is to raise funds for
charities whose services, activities or programs benefit youth and the
arts along the Gulf Coast. The donations also bring the total raised for
area charities by the race since its inception to over $3 million.
The donation also marks the second major charitable gift made by the
Food World-Senior Bowl partnership within the last year. Last October,
Food World, Senior Bowl and BI-LO/Bruno’s officials presented a $1
million donation to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief along
the Gulf Coast.

“For the past 17 years, the Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run has made
a significant impact on dozens of charities supporting youth and the
arts throughout our communities, and it gives us great satisfaction to
be able to donate such a significant amount to charity this year, in
conjunction with our charitable partner Food World, to these worthwhile
causes,” said Senior Bowl president and CEO Steve Hale.
Food World and Senior Bowl officials presented checks to 16 different
organization and agencies during its annual “Charity Caravan” tour held
at six locations in Mobile and Baldwin counties on Thursday.
The Charity Caravan’s first stop on Thursday morning was at Thomas
Hospital in Fairhope, and continued up the Eastern Shore for another
check presentation at Mercy Medical in Daphne. Thomas will use the funds
for a new childhood obesity awareness and prevention program in Baldwin
County, while the donation to Mercy will go to its Guardian Angel
Program, which supports the cost of Mercy’s extensive pediatric home
care services.
On Thursday afternoon, officials presented a check to the Pre-School for
the Sensory Impaired in Mobile, while five more community service
organizations received donations during a presentation at the Mobile
Association for Retarded Citizens facility on Gordon Smith Drive. In
addition to MARC, checks were also presented to the Drug Education
Council, Child Advocacy Center, Mobile Association for the Blind, and
Special Olympics.
The USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital Lobby was the site of another
ceremony on Thursday afternoon. In addition to presenting a $50,000
check to the hospital which represented the fourth installment of a
five-year, $250,000 pledge made by the Charity Run to fund its
newly-renovated lobby, Food World and Senior Bowl officials also
presented checks to the YMCA, Mobile Area Swim Association, National
Youth Sports Program and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Officials then closed out the day by presenting major donations to three
Mobile arts organizations – the Mobile Symphony, Mobile Opera and Mobile
Ballet -- during a presentation at the Ballet’s offices on Downtowner
Loop in Mobile.
“Food World believes in the importance of working for our communities.
In that way, we return something to our communities and say thank you to
our customers,” said Food World district manager David Powell. “Through
these donations made on behalf of the Charity Run, the Food World-Senior
Bowl charitable partnership has created an opportunity for our company
to fulfill the responsibility of returning something to our communities
in ways greater than ever before.”
On Friday, major donations will be presented to Sacred Heart Children’s
Hospital in Pensacola and the Pensacola Boys and Girls Clubs. Recent
Charity Run funds donated to Sacred Heart have been used for the
purchase of the hospital’s new neonatal and pediatric ambulance.
“The success that we continue to enjoy with the Charity Run, combined
with the Senior Bowl’s goals of charitable giving which we share with
Food World, has once again enabled this event to positively affect
thousands of individuals who are served and impacted by the
organizations and agencies selected to receive this year’s proceeds,”
said Clifton Morrissette, Senior Bowl game captain for 2006-07.
The Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run is one of America’s premier road
races, annually held annually in November in downtown Mobile and
features over 4,500 runners in its 10K and One-Mile Fun Run events.
Since 2000, the race has also held the prestigious distinction of
serving as the host site for the USA Track and Field 10,000 Meter
National Championship, as America’s premier distance runners and U.S.
Olympians have competed for the coveted USA title during the event.
The 19th annual Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run is scheduled for
Saturday, November 4, 2006.
