North Scores 31-14 Win Over South In 2006
Senior Bowl, Presented By Food World

Miami’s Sinorice Moss wins MVP in losing cause, while Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst shines for the North.

MOBILE, Ala. (January 28, 2006) -- The North rode the arm of Clemson’s Charlie Whitehurst, the legs of Penn State’s Michael Robinson and some outstanding defensive plays to score a 31-14 win over the South in the 57th annual Senior Bowl, presented by Food World, Saturday afternoon in Mobile.

However, it was a South player, Miami receiver Sinorice Moss, who won the game’s MVP Award with an impressive effort which included three receptions for 45 and a touchdown and a 27-yard gain on a reverse.

The contest concluded a week-long series of practice sessions for 100 of the nation’s top senior NFL Draft prospects who were members of the North and South squads, all under the watchful eyes of over 800 coaches, scouts and front office personnel from the National Football League who were in Mobile during Senior Bowl Week.

Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and his staff coached the North team to victory in the contest, while San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and his staff coached the South squad.

Whitehurst and Robinson both managed to shine for the North, with Whitehurst being named the North’s Offensive MVP for a performance that included directing a seamless drive in which he was perfect on five attempts for 66 yards, concluding with a 15-yard scoring pass to Colorado tight end Joe Klopfenstein. He finished 7-of-9 for 90 yards.

Robinson, the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Nittany Lions, did most his damage to the South with his legs as he rushed nine times for 63 yards and helped lead the North on two scoring drives. He was 1-3 passing for nine yards.

Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler accounted for one North touchdown on a seven-yard pass to Arizona State’s Derek Hagan in the fourth quarter, and Virginia Tech running back Cedric Humes scored the contest’s other touchdown on a one-yard run in the third.

Nebraska's Daniel Bullocks recovered two muffed punts, grabbing one in the end zone for a score and setting up the final touchdown with the other in the fourth quarter.

Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams played effectively with three carries for 31 yards, and also ran through the North defense on a 28 yard screen pass in the fourth quarter and was the South's offensive MVP.

The defensive MVPs were Georgia Tech linebacker Gerris Wilkinson for the South, and Penn State defensive end  Tamba Hali for the North. Hali had two of the North's five sacks and Wilkinson also had a sack, along with four tackles.

The game's two in-state quarterback products both threw touchdown passes for the South. UAB's Darrell Hackney hit a wide-open Devin Aromashodu of Auburn in the left corner of the end zone for a 17-yard score early in the fourth and Alabama's Brodie Croyle hit Moss for a 30-yard TD in the first.

Tight ends Dominique Byrd of Southern California and Klopfenstein were the North's top receivers. Byrd had four catches for 67 yards and Klopfenstein finished with three receptions for 39 yards. Washington State’s Jerome Harrison rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries for the North.

Other top defensive performances were turned in by Virginia Tech’s Darryl Tapp for the North, who had two tackles, two quarterback hurries and a broken up pass, Iowa linebacker Chad Greenway, who led the North with four tackles, Penn State defensive back Anwar Phillips, who had two tackles and a 49-yard interception return.

In addition to Wilkinson, the South’s other defensive stars were Alabama defensive back Roman Harper, led all defenders with seven tackles, and also recovered a fumble and broke up a pass; and LSU’s Kyle Williams, who had five tackles, two for loss and one pass break-up.

The contest was played before the game’s 12th consecutive sellout crowd, as 40,646 fans filled Ladd-Peebles Stadium for the game.
