MOBILE,
Ala. (September 17, 2007) -- Runners and walkers of all ages and
fitness levels are encouraged to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of
one of the South’s premier road races -- the Food World Senior Bowl
Charity Run -- scheduled for Saturday, November 3, in downtown Mobile.
The popular running festival for charity,
which annually features over 5,000 participants and has helped raise
over $4.2 million for Gulf Coast charities, will once again offer a 10K
run/walk, a 5K run/walk and one-mile fun run/walk events, all for a low
entry fee of just $12.

“The Charity Run has earned a tremendous
reputation over the years for its many positive and unique aspects
including a low entry fee, outstanding runner perks, quality pre-race
and post-race activities and an event that has helped raise thousands
for Gulf Coast charities,” said Charity Run race chairman J. Turner. “It
is our goal to continue to expand the opportunities for people in our
community, especially young people and their families of all fitness
levels, to participate in the event, while also continuing the race’s
great charitable tradition through the Food World-Senior Bowl Charitable
Partnership.”
In 2006, a 5K event was added to the
10K and One-Mile Fun Run, an addition which proved extremely popular
with area runners. Special “Fastest Family” and team competitions will
also be held in conjunction with the 10K and 5K races this year.
“We had a tremendous turnout for our
inaugural 5K race a year ago, which simply allowed more people the
opportunity to participate in the Charity Run, so we’re looking forward
to offering that event in addition to the other races again this year,”
said Senior Bowl president Steve Hale. “We would also like to emphasize
that participants can run or walk all of the events, allowing people of
all fitness levels the chance to be a part of the Charity Run.”
In addition to the three different
races, pre- and post-race activities have been also expanded to provide
more entertainment and food than in previous years, and the One-Mile
event is officially titled the “Healthy Families, Healthy Kids Fun Run”
to help promote and raise further awareness for running and fitness for
kids and their families throughout Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
The Charity Run allows runners to help
not just one, but many great causes, as proceeds from the event will go
to the Food World-Senior Bowl Charitable Partnership which seeks to
raise funds for area charities that benefit youth related activities
along the Gulf Coast. Over $4.2 million has been donated to charity
since the partnership’s inception.
Participants may run or walk the 10K,
5K or One-Mile events. The 5K race will start at the same place and time
as the 10K event at 8:30 a.m., and the fast, flat 10K and 5K courses
will begin on Government Street at Hamilton in downtown Mobile and
finish on Government Street at Royal, just one block from the Mobile
Convention Center, making it convenient for runners to attend all of the
post-race festivities.
The Charity Run is also proud to
promote health and fitness for people of all ages throughout the Gulf
Coast through the Healthy Families, Healthy Kids Fun Run. The event,
which features over 3,000 registrants each year, will be one-mile in
distance, and seeks to get families and kids involved in an organized
road race.
The Fun Run will start at 10:00 a.m. on
Church Street at Royal near Ft. Conde and will finish at the same
location as the 10K and 5K races on Government Street at Royal.
A special program is also once again
being offered to school children and their families attending schools in
Mobile and Baldwin counties to represent their schools by taking part in
the Fun Run, 5K and 10K events. Students may take part in the race at
the reduced rate of just $8 each, while the entry fee is also reduced
for their parents to $10 each.
Participants in the school program also
help raise money for their schools, as the Charity Run donates back to
each school for every registration received. Students should contact
their school’s P.E. teacher for more information.
The Charity Run has also once again
kept its entry fee extremely low at just $12 in advance, giving runners
what undoubtedly ranks as one of America’s best running values.
For the $12 entry fee, each runner will
receive the race’s popular 100 percent cotton long-sleeve T-shirt and
admittance to the Food World Family Fun Festival held following the
event in the Mobile Convention Center. The most generous post-race event
in the South, the Festival will feature free food such as fruit,
jambalaya, hot dogs, yogurt, ice cream and more, musical entertainment
and interactive games and activities.
Also, the first 1,000 registered
runners will be able to attend free of charge the Whitney Bank Pasta
Party held the Friday evening before the race in the Mobile Convention
Center featuring all-you-can-eat pasta, salad, dessert and beverages, as
well as live musical entertainment.
Top division and age group finishers in
both the 10K and 5K races, as well as the Fun Run winners, will also
receive special awards commemorating their accomplishment, while
division and Fun Run winners will be introduced to the crowd during the
2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl football game, set for January 26, 2008.
