Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run Offers Events For Runners Of All Ages and Fitness Levels, Celebrates 20th Anniversary This Saturday

5K race continues to grow in popularity along with the 10K and One-Mile Events

MOBILE, Ala. (October 26, 2007) -- For the past 20 years, the Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run has made a difference for thousands along the Gulf Coast.

Whether it has been through helping to generate over $4.2 million for Gulf Coast area charities, or by offering a quality running festival promoting health and fitness for runners of all ages and fitness levels, the Charity Run has earned its rightful status as one of the South’s premier road races.

All of that success culminates once again this Saturday, November 3, as the Food World Senior Bowl Charity Run will hold its 20th event in the streets of downtown Mobile.

And based on early registration totals, this year’s event is headed for another outstanding turnout of over 5,000 participants, with runners and walkers taking advantage of the low $12 advance entry fee as well as the opportunity to register for the 10K and 5K races and the Healthy Families, Healthy Kids One-Mile Fun Run.

“Over the last week, we’ve seen a marked increase in overall registration, but in particular the registration for the 5K event has really picked up,” said Senior Bowl media relations director Vic Knight. “We added the 5K race a year ago in order to increase the opportunities for people of all ages in our community to take part in the Charity Run, while also maintaining and improving many of the aspects of the event which have proven so popular with participating runners over the years.”

Over 3,000 Mobile and Baldwin County students and their families have also already registered for the event through their schools with the popular Charity Run School Program.

Schools use the Program as both a fundraiser and an opportunity for students and their families to participate in a fun, family event geared towards health and fitness. Over $10,000 will be donated to area schools this year by the race through this program.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration, the Charity Run’s pre-race and post-race activities have been expanded to provide more entertainment and food than in previous years.

The Food World Family Fun Festival held following the event in the Mobile Convention Center will once again be one of the most generous post-race events in the South featuring free food such as fruit, jambalaya, hot dogs, yogurt, ice cream and more, live musical entertainment from two bands, and lots of interactive games and activities.

Also, the first 1,000 registered runners will be able to attend free of charge the Whitney Bank Pasta Party held the Friday evening before the race in the Mobile Convention Center featuring all-you-can-eat pasta, salad, dessert and beverages, as well as live musical entertainment.

Participating in the Charity Run also allows runners to help not just one, but many great causes, as proceeds from the event will go to the Food World-Senior Bowl Charitable Partnership which seeks to raise funds for area charities that benefit youth related activities along the Gulf Coast. Since its inception, the race has helped raise over $4.2 million for area charities.

Runners may run or walk the 10K, 5K or One-Mile events. The 5K race will start at the same time as the 10K event at 8:30 a.m., and the lightning fast 10K and 5K courses will begin on Government Street at Hamilton in downtown Mobile and finish on Government Street at Royal, just one block from the Mobile Convention Center, making it convenient for runners to attend all of the post-race festivities.

The Fun Run will start at 10:00 a.m. on Church Street at Royal near Ft. Conde and will finish at the same location as the 10K and 5K races on Government Street at Royal.

Each runner will receive the race’s popular 100 percent cotton, long sleeve race T-shirt, while top division and age group finishers in both the 10K and 5K races, as well as the Fun Run winners, will also receive special awards commemorating their accomplishment. Fun Run winners will be introduced to the crowd during the 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl football game, set for January 26, 2008.

Race headquarters will open in the Mobile Convention Center on Thursday, and runners may register and pick up their T-shirts and run numbers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headquarters will also be open on Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 6:30 – 8:00 a.m.
