Former Senior Bowlers Win Major NFL Statistical Titles In 2007

It was a banner year for former Senior Bowlers in the NFL, as game alums won the league’s rushing, receiving, tackling, scoring and yards from scrimmage titles.

MOBILE, Ala. (January 1, 2008) -- Each year, the Under Armour Senior Bowl features the future stars of the NFL. In 2007, however, that legacy was stronger than ever.

It was a banner year for former Senior Bowl players in the National Football League, as game alums swept the league’s rushing, receiving, tackling, scoring and yards from scrimmage titles.

San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, a 2001 Senior Bowl MVP, won his second straight NFL rushing championship with 1,474 yards. The 2006 NFL MVP also scored 15 rushing TD’s and added three receiving to finish second in the NFL with 18 touchdowns.

The 2001 Senior Bowl also featured the NFL’s leading receiver this season, as Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowler Reggie Wayne led the league with 1,510 receiving yards on 104 catches, including ten that went for touchdowns.

Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook, a 2002 Senior Bowler from Villanova, led the NFL in yards from scrimmage. His 1,333 rushing yards, which ranked third in the NFL, combined with 771 receiving yards to give him an NFL best 2,140 total yards this season.

Defensively, no Senior Bowl player in recent memory has had a better rookie season than that turned in by San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis in 2007.

The 11th overall selection in the draft, Willis ended up leading the NFL in tackles with 174 – 33 more than any other defender – and had ten double digit tackle games including a season-high 20 in week 16 against Tampa Bay.

The NFL’s leading scorer in 2007 was another rookie, Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby. The former Colorado star scored a league-leading 141 total points. Another former Senior Bowl kicker, Steven Gostkowski of the New England, led the AFC in scoring with 137 points.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware, a 2005 Senior Bowler from Troy, led the NFC with 14 quarterback sacks to earn his second straight NFC Pro Bowl team.

In addition to the statistical champs, former Senior Bowl quarterback Brett Favre of the Packers enjoyed a memorable season, passing for 4,155 yards and setting new NFL career records for touchdown passes and passing yards that currently stand at 442 and 61,655, respectively.

Over 575 former Senior Bowl players are currently active in the NFL, including 24 players who were named to the rosters for the 2008 NFL Pro Bowl game.
