MOBILE, Ala. (January
6, 2008) -- For the third straight year, a former Senior
Bowl layer has been named the Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of
the Year.
Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders, who represented Iowa on the 2004
Senior Bowl North team roster, was named the 2007 winner on Monday.
Sanders, a dominating, hard-hitting safety nicknamed “The Eraser” by
Colts head coach Tony Dungy, recorded 96 total tackles during the
season, 71 solos, and added 3.5 sacks, six pass deflections and two
interceptions during a stellar 2007 season.

Sanders is also the third straight former Senior Bowl player to win the
prestigious award, as Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was the
Defensive Player of the Year in 2005 and Miami Dolphins defensive end
won the award in 2006.
On Friday, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis was named the
NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. In addition to Sanders, 23 other
former Senior Bowl players were named to the rosters for the 2008 NFL
Pro Bowl game, and over 575 former Senior Bowl players were active in
the NFL during the 2007 season.
The next showcase of future NFL stars is scheduled for Saturday, January
26, 2008, when the 59th annual Under Armour Senior Bowl will take place
in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
The contest will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. and the game will be nationally
televised by the NFL Network.
