MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 24) -- The 2004 Senior Bowl, presented by Food World, is in the
books.
North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns
to win the game's Most Valuable Player Award and help lead the South to a 28-10 victory in the
55th annual Senior Bowl on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 40,646 in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles
Stadium.
The South jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead on the strength of two Rivers
touchdown passes. The first was a nine-yarder to Arkansas' Cedric Cobbs, and the second a 21-yard strike
to Virginia Tech's Ernest Wilford.
Florida State running back Greg Jones then scored on a brilliant 16-yard run to give the
South a commanding 21 point lead with 1:16 remaining in the opening stanza. The North countered with
ten unanswered points, with Michigan's John Navarre connecting on a 35-yard touchdown pass
to USC's Keary Colbert at the 12:25 mark of the second quarter, and Iowa's Nate Kaeding
hitting a 25-yard field goal with 2:04 left in the third.
Florida State's Jones then closed out the scoring with his second touchdown of the day, a
four-yard run with 4:01 remaining in the game to seal the win for the South.
In addition to Rivers, other game MVP's included Jones for the South's offense, and FSU
teammate Darnell Dockett for the South defense. Tusculum College defensive back Ricardo
Colclough was named the North's most valuable defensive player, while Ohio State receiver
Michael Jenkins was the North's most valuable offensive player.
San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer and his staff coached the South
team to the victory, while Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis and his staff coached the
North squad in the contest.
Ninety-six of the nation's premier senior NFL Draft prospects took part in the contest,
which serves as football's premier pre-draft talent showcase and the nation's most unique football
game.
The game was also the climax to a week-long series of player practices and special events
in Mobile which were attended by over 800 National Football League general managers, head
coaches, assistants, scouts and other front office personnel.
