Daphne’s Pat White claims overall MVP in 2009 Under Armour Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 24) -- Pat White grew up watching the Under Armour Senior Bowl from the stands at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Saturday night, in front of an announced crowd of 38,796, the Daphne, Ala. native was the one everyone was watching after an MVP performance in a 35-18 South victory. The former West Virginia star accounted for 126 yards of offense and one touchdown, a 39 yard toss to Mike Wallace in the third quarter.

The South set the tone early, scoring on their second possession of the ballgame after a 16 play, 80 yard drive that was capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by former Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson. Wilson, who was named the Under Armour Offensive Player of the Game, finished the night 7-of-13 for 56 yards passing and 17 yards rushing.

Louie Sakoda’s 38 yard field goal in the second quarter cut the South’s lead to four, but a pair of one yard touchdown runs by Quinn Johnson and Andre Brown put the South up 21-3 with less than two minutes to go in the half. Brown, a former standout at NC State, was named the Most Outstanding Player on the South team following the victory.

Jeremiah Johnson’s four-yard touchdown catch from Nathan Brown gave the North new life at the end of the half, as they trailed 21-10 going into the break. The South stymied that momentum however midway through the third quarter when White threw a perfect pass to former Ole Miss wide receiver Mike Wallace in the corner of the end zone to give the home team a 28-10 lead. The North showed life again early in the fourth quarter on Eric Kettani’s one yard plunge and a two point conversion from Jeremiah Johnson, bringing them within 10 points (28-18) early in the fourth quarter.

The South responded with just under nine minutes to play in the game after Peria Jerry fell on a Rhett Bomar fumble in the end zone, giving the South the 35-18 win. The win was the South’s second straight in the series and they now lead the North 29-25-1.

Other award winners Saturday were former Tennessee defensive lineman Robert Ayers (Under Armour Defensive Player of the Game) and former Ohio State wide out Brian Robiskie (Most Outstanding Player—North Team). Both were honored along with Brown, Wilson and White immediately following the game in a post-game awards ceremony.
