Summary

Cody is a three-plus year starter for the Rebels as their free safety. He has a tall frame with long arms and is muscularly proportioned in his upper and lower bodies. Generally, he aligns into the boundary on the weak-side of the offensive formation. Cody stays square to the line-of-scrimmage, and reads the QB and the releases of the receivers on his side. In run support, he is a chest-up tackler in confined areas and uses his length to reach out and wrap when in space. In pass coverage, he is utilized as more of a zone defender where he can use his vision and instincts to react and break on the football. At times, he will swoop down from depth on a crossing route in Man-to-Man, but is rarely asked to cover a third wide receiver or tight end from a “down” position. Cody uses his eyes well and has excellent ball skills as evidenced by his 10 career interceptions.

Overall, Cody plays with instincts in diagnosing run/pass keys, brings a physical attitude in tackling and has range from the middle of the field. Still, he is a one-speed athlete who has some lateral misses in the open field, so he will need to quicken up his movements when trying to corral NFL-caliber ball carriers. He has starter potential in the future because of his size and nose for the football. Cody has forced 4 fumbles and recovered 3 during his first three seasons, and in their 2014 opening game vs. Boise State, Cody added another interception to his total.

WHAT NFL SCOUTS WANT TO SEE IN 2014: For Cody to be more sudden when changing directions and to show more initial acceleration when running to the deep part of the field.
