MOBILE, Ala. (Dec. 21) -- Fresh off his trip to New York City to pick up the Heisman Trophy, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will soon be making travel plans for Mobile.
College football's most electrifying player in 2017 has accepted his invitation to the 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl, the game announced on Friday.
"Baker is known for his competitive personality, so it's not a surprise that he would want to be in Mobile to showcase his abilities and leadership qualities," said Reese's Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage. "And, it's exciting for the Reese's Senior Bowl to have a Heisman Trophy winner in our game."
Mayfield will be the first Heisman winner to come to the Reese's Senior Bowl since Tim Tebow in 2007 and the fourth overall in the past 15 years (Troy Smith, 2006; Carson Palmer, 2002).
Mayfield was spectacular during his final year of college, leading the 2nd-ranked Sooners to a spot in the four-team playoff. The confident QB will lead 2nd-ranked Oklahoma against 3rd-ranked Georgia in the semifinals on New Year's Day.
So far this season the former walk-on has thrown for 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He led the Sooners to the Big 12 Championship and ran away in voting for the Heisman Trophy Award, given to the nation's top player.
Mayfield completed a nation-high 71% of his passes, while his 41 touchdown passes were second-best and his passer rating (203.8) was a single-season record. During his career, Mayfield, who played eight games as a walk-on at Texas Tech as a freshman before transferring to Oklahoma, has thrown for more than 12,000 yards, 117 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
Mayfield is the seventh quarterback to accept an invitation to the 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl, joining Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State), Luke Falk (Washington State), Kurt Benkert (Virginia), Mike White (Western Kentucky), Kyle Lauletta (Richmond) and Brandon Silvers (Troy). The game will add one more quarterback to the roster.
Silvers was the MVP of Troy's New Orleans Bowl victory over North Texas last Saturday. He finished off his career with 10,436 yards and 69 touchdowns. The Orange Beach, Ala., native played his high school football at Gulf Shores High School, about an hour from Reese's Senior Bowl headquarters in Mobile.
One of Mayfield's college teammates at Oklahoma will also be coming to Mobile. Ogbo Okoronkwo was the co-Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, Butkus Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy. He is a Walter Camp First Team All-American and Second Team All-American for three other organizations (AP, FWAA, Sporting News). He has eight sacks and 17 tackles for a loss in 13 games this season.
The 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl is January 27 in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:30pmCT and the game is televised live on NFL Network.
