Beach District Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, he was also a two-time All-Tidewater selection and participated in the U.S. Army All-American Game after completing his career at Ocean Lakes High School, Virginia Beach, VA. Quality backup as a true freshman in 2014, he is now a three-year starter for the Seminoles. Reese's Senior Bowl Invitee
Derrick is a three-year starter at defensive tackle for Florida State. No redshirt, he immediately became part of the defensive line rotation in 2014 as a true freshman before becoming a full-fledged starter as a sophomore. He has a very thick body type with a massive bubble and sturdy legs. For his height, Derrick has long arms, which helps in taking on blocks and rushing the passer. He typically aligns as a 1-technique or Nose tackle in their 4-3 front.
Against the run, because of his powerful base, he is difficult to move. He can stack direct runs and has the quickness in his hands and feet to shock, shed and tackle at the line-of-scrimmage. On plays away, he demonstrates short area agility in pursuing from the backside and will hustle to chase.
As a pass rusher, Derrick can generate power from his lower body and bull the inside of the pocket. He has some degree of escape quickness, but would not classify him as a difference-making situational Sub rusher (Nickel or Dime). Overall, Derrick is an early-down defender and likely rotational contributor as a rookie with the opportunity to have a legitimate pro career due to his girth, strength and durability.
