Through the annual donation of each Senior Bowl Committee member, Senior Bowl Charities is able to give to local youths and youth related activities in the Mobile community.
After the establishment of the Mobile Baldwin Athletic Partnership (MBAP) in 2021, the Senior Bowl saw another opportunity in the Mobile Touchdown Club, where all ages of athletics would be supported in the Mobile Community. The Senior Bowl hosts an NFL Flag league for ages 6-12, supports high school sports through the MBAP, and now with the Mobile Touchdown Club, youth parks will be provided with the equipment needed to ensure all ages are gaining valuable experience in athletics.
Part of this partnership was to rebrand the original “Senior Bowl Committee” to the “Senior Bowl Touchdown Club.” The Mobile Touchdown Club has supported youth athletics in the Mobile Community since 1948. The mission to merge will provide a greater impact on the funds from Senior Bowl Charities that will be allocated directly to the youth athletic groups in the community through the partnership.
Many members volunteer on specific sub-committees which organize different aspects of Senior Bowl operations during game week and game day, as well as the various charitable events put on by the Senior Bowl in the Mobile community each year.
For 76 years, the Senior Bowl’s legendary hospitality events have been as much a part of Senior Bowl Week as its practices and game.
They began with the very first Senior Bowl in Mobile in 1951 in a small room at the Battle House Hotel, as the game’s original General Manager, Rea Schuessler and other founding fathers first entertained those from the NFL with Mobile’s own brand of Southern Hospitality.
As the game continued to grow in stature, so did the nightly events, becoming an annual tradition on the NFL calendar as coaches and scouts looked forward not only to coming to Mobile to see the best NFL draft prospects each year, but also to enjoy the hospitality that only Mobile and the Senior Bowl could provide. Today, of course, the events continue, although on a much bigger scale in the Mobile Convention center. But they still mean the same, as hundreds from the NFL gather each year to see old friends, share stories, enjoy Mobile’s famous seafood and the gracious hospitality of its residents just like they did in 1951.
